Papercutting

Well finally I've finished my papercutting. I had been looking at the movement of trees which then progressed to looking at the movement through the seasons.

I first measured out four sheets of card, 45cm square. Unfortunately I was only able to get white card. On one card I did an outline of a tree. I then traced this out on outline paper and drew the outline on the remaining three cards, to keep the same size throughout all cards. I added in little bits of detail relevent to the seasons e.g. bluebells for spring, butterflies for summer, mushrooms and falling leaves for autumn and starkness of winter. I cut these out with a cutting blade and cutting mat. I put a coat of black ink on each sheet. Gillian then made a frame for me and I attached rods to the top of each sheet. I inserted the 'seasons' one by one into the frame and took photographs of them. I then put some tissue paper at the back, put some coloured cellophene behind it and took more pictures. The red/orange colour was more effective.

I played around with slotting them in together and seeing the overlap. I also reversed the 'spring' card and the white reflected well through the black. I really liked this.

At night I then got a torch and camera and recorded a film of the four seasons. Here is a link to it. Hopefully it'll work for you!!
