Various Photos

 

Here are some photos I took while out and about - over a few occasions, not all in one day!

 

 

 

I incorporated babygros from a previous project.

 

 

 

I really like this photo because of the netting in particular. The wind was blowing and the net was just flapping - exposing and concealing the room it was protecting. The pattern on the netting reminds me of my daisies!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Walking along the street I came across this hair accessory. I had to snap it. It was completely out of place and looked lost....

 

 

Also came across this nappy (unused!) just on the street.

 

Wordsearch

 

I then went looking in to the games / activities of children and decided to make up some word search games.

 

 

 

 

 

Here are two that I went with.

 

 

I printed these up onto various surfaces, including children's t-shirts! Some of the words in them are not noticed at first glance, but are words of relevance in regards to violence.

 

 

 

 

I did drawings regarding text and incorporated them on to various prints: searchwords being one of them.

 

 

Embroidery

 

I was also looking at images that implied the violence that children have witnessed or know about. I wanted to see how to work with them and chose to bring them to life through embroidery.

 

 

I put them onto frames. I stained some of them with coffee to again imply destruction and lack of care.

 

 

I also got some teddy bears / soft toys and embroidered some daisies onto them.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Daisies

 

 I started researching what type of symbols are used for innocence of children / childhood, and the main one that I came across was daisies. I took some photos of them and worked with them to screen print.

 

 

 

 

 This is the final image I went with

 

 

I screened a bright yellow onto various types of paper: white fabriano, card, handmade paper and tissue paper.

 

This is the reverse of the green tissue paper. I love the way the tissue paper has soaked the ink in different areas.

 

 

I then reversed the area to be printed on photoshop and loaded the image onto the screen. I then printed the daisies in black - to imply innocence being destroyed.

Teddy in the Window

 

Next I went out taking photos in derelict buildings that I could get in to. I took some toys with me to use as props if I didn't come across any that were actually left there. I'll upload the various photos I took in a separate post, but wanted to show the photo I decided to use for the bitmap silkscreen image.

 

Firstly I printed a plain background, pale pink. I then screened the bitmap image.

I'm really happy with it.

Child's Cooker - Silkscreen

 

For my new project I've chosen to work with the theme of violence against children, more so from the child's point of view. I've been researching more in to the reports compiled regarding this subject, and obtaining first hand thoughts and experiences.

 

I went out and about taking some photos and came across this particular object. It's a child's cooker unit which was left against an old wall. I think the moss and water damage works well with this image.

 

 

I used this photo for a silkscreen print.

 

This is the final print on the wall. I needed to work a little more with the contrast of tones before printing, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out.

 

 

I later had worked with text and screened them on some of my prints.
